As a young Egyptian woman in graphic design, I feel that Arabic doesn’t received enough recognition for its versatility and beauty. I created an Arabic typography poster to educate other designers on the functionalities and aesthetics of Arabic script, showcasing how it can coexist harmoniously with Latin script in a beautiful and distinctive manner. In response, I created a newspaper spread inspired by the iconic "Al Ahram" logo, transforming it into "Ya Haram," a common Arabic phrase used in situations where one conveys sympathy. To make complex information easily understandable, I utilized visualizations such as the fluctuation between the US dollar and the Egyptian pound over the past five years. Being a Coptic Egyptian woman, I’ve centered my designs around fighting social issues in my community, one of them being the stigma around mental health and how it’s not talked about. However, as I grew up I began to realize the prevalance of sexism rooted within the culture. Being from a strict and traditional culture means people have been too afraid to speak up about the unequal treatment of men versus women in my church and culture. Each person was assigned a line from the poem “No Manifesto” by Yvonne Rainer, a contemporary American dancer, choreographer, and filmmaker. I was given the assignment of creatively animating her name. I decided to rotoscope one of her more famous dances, which can be found in a blurry clip on YouTube because I felt it embodies her spirit and personality. Witnessing this firsthand left me feeling deeply disappointed.
